Description:

About 8,000 people in eastern Newfoundland are still without electricity after sleet and wind pounded the area Friday and Saturday. A spokesperson for Newfoundland Power, Michelle Coughlan, said over 100 poles and power lines were either destroyed or damaged by the storm. Repair crews from across the province have been called in to help but the bad weather is hampering their efforts. "Full service will not be restored to the Old Perlican, Heart's Content, Bay de Verde, New Chelsea area until late Monday evening and for the Bonavista peninsula it will mean that full power will not be restored until Tuesday evening," Coughlan said. Some areas have been without power since Friday afternoon. Coughlan said portable generators will be brought in to the affected communities so that residents can have power for a couple of hours at a time on a rotating basis until the system is back to full capacity.
