Description:

Eight were killed and at least 19 were hurt when a Manila-bound bus slammed into a tree along Marcos highway in Barangay Palina, Pugo town in La Union, Saturday afternoon. Senior Superintendent Noli Taliño, La Union’s police chief, said the accident happened when the brakes of the bus malfunctioned and the vehicle slammed into an acacia tree at 5:40 p.m. Taliño said 17 other passengers were rushed to the Baguio General Hospital and two more were confined at a La Union hospital. Taliño said the bus driver, Sylvestre Binay Jr. who sustained minor injuries, has been detained at the Pugo police station. Binay told police that the brakes did not work, causing the accident.
