An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 has shaken the eastern province of Elazig, a seismology centre said Monday. Gov. Muammer Erol said there was damage to houses in at least one village The Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory said the quake occurred at 4:32 a.m. local time Monday. It was followed by an aftershock measuring 4.1. Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the North Anatolian fault.
