Situation Update No. 1 On 2010-03-15 at 12:57:03 [UTC] Event: Vehicle Accident Location: Australia State of Northern Territory Stuart Highway Darwin Number of Injured: 33 person(s) Situation: Thirty-three people have been injured after two trucks and a bus crashed on the Stuart Highway near Darwin. A school bus carrying young children bore much of the impact of the crash, which smashed both its front and rear windows. Police say the bus was sandwiched between the trucks at an intersection near a petrol station at Pinelands just before 4:00pm. One of the trucks caught fire in the crash and while that has been extinguished, there is still oil and fuel on the road. Fire and ambulance crews rushed to the scene to attend to the injured passengers. Police Duty Superintendent Bob Harrison says he does not believe the injuries are serious, but most victims were transported to hospital. "Obviously there will be some people with concussion and shock - things of that nature," he said. The Royal Darwin Hospital says all the crash victims are conscious and in a stable condition. Len Notaras, the head of the hospital's trauma response unit, says 33 people, including children as young as five, have a range of injuries from cuts and bruising to bone fractures. He says all but three or four will probably be discharged later today. "The three drivers are being assessed as well," he said. "[They are] fairly straight-forward injuries for this kind of an accident - nothing I could describe as critical. "But by the same token, all are being fully assessed." | |
