Situation Update No. 2 On 2010-03-19 at 12:28:56 [UTC] Event: Vehicle Accident Location: Nepal Kalikot-Surkhet highway Kittu village Number of Deads: 33 person(s) Number of Injured: 10 person(s) Situation: Rescuers were searching a fast flowing river in western Nepal on Friday for several people still believed to be missing in a bus accident, police said. A police statement said 33 bodies have been recovered from the site of Thursday's crash and rescuers were scouring the banks of the Karnali river for more bodies. It was still not clear how many people were on board the crowded bus when it veered off a mountain road and plunged into the river near Pipalkot village, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) west of Katmandu. Ten people injured in the accident are being treated in nearby hospitals. Buses traveling the route are generally overcrowded, with people packed inside the vehicles as well as on their roofs. Poor vehicle and road maintenance is blamed for many accidents in Nepal. | |
