Event: Biological Hazard
Location: Romania County of Tulcea Letea

Situation:

The situation arisen in the eastern community of Letea (located in the Danube Delta, in Tulcea County), where a bird flu outbreak was confirmed, is being tightly monitored; WHO keeps the 6th degree alert in place and monitors the outbreak through the Public Health Directorate, Geza Molnar – MD, PhD, advisor to the Health Minister, on Tuesday told. Molnar added that Letea is a small community of 200-300 people, that no case of respiratory virus infection was registered so far and that should they appear, samples will be sent to the Bucharest ‘Cantacuzino’ Institute of Research and Development for Microbiology and Immunology to be analyzed. The European Commission confirmed on Tuesday the areas at risk signaled by the Romanian authorities due to the presence of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza in the village of Letea, Tulcea County. This is the first case of bird flu confirmed in the EU since March 2009, when the virus was also reported in Germany. Frederic Vincent, European Commission Health spokesman, said that immediate preventive measures provide for the establishment of a 6 km-wide protection zone around the poultry farm concerned, and of a 20 kilometer-wide ‘ high risk’ surveillance zone.
