Situation Update No. 4 On 2010-03-14 at 10:14:33 [UTC] Event: Extreme Weather Location: USA MultiStates States of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut Number of Deads: 3 person(s) Situation: The wicked storm that walloped the Big Apple and surrounding area yesterday with near hurricane force winds and torrential rains left at least three people dead. Lawrence Krause, 50, and Ovadi Mussaffi, 52, were returning from synagogue in Teaneck, NJ, when a massive tree fell on them. And last night, a 73-year-old woman was killed by a falling tree in Bay Shore, LI. Two other people were injured in the 8:20 p.m. incident. The storm, which soaked the city with more than 3 inches of rain yesterday, snapped trees like twigs, flooded roadways and left hundreds of thousands in the area without power. More than 125,000 Con Ed customers lost power in the five boroughs and at least 140,000 on Long Island were in the dark. Most are expected to have power back today. A New York-bound New Jersey Transit train with 500 on board was stranded for almost seven hours last night before officials were able to clear the flooded tracks. The storm was expected to drop another inch through last night, for a total of 4 inches -- the most since a February 2009 storm dumped 5 inches here. Scattered showers are expected throughout the area today. Yesterday's howling winds -- including a 67-mph gust recorded at JFK -- caused lengthy delays at area airports. Volume to 911 was so heavy at times that callers heard a recorded message asking them to hold. | |
