Description: At least a dozen people were evaluated Thursday morning after complaining of becoming ill at a medical facility in the Near South Side Pilsen neighborhood. A Level 1 HazMat was called at the Alivio Medical Center at 2355 S. Western Ave. about 10 a.m. after someone called and reported several people getting sick, Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford said. "We put our meters all over the center and we got zero [gas] readings," he said. People still complained of feeling sick and moved themselves to another portion of the center, at 966 W. 23rd St., where they were being evaluated by paramedics, Langford said. "We're looking at about a dozen people but have gotten several refusals for medical treatment," he said. "We had some of them remove their clothing and get into gowns just to be safe, but we really have found zero gas readings." The HazMat was secured about 11:45 a.m. Alivio Medical Center is a bilingual organization providing health care to the Latino community for the uninsured and "underinsured," according to its Web site.
