2010-03-14 03:58:37 - Biological Hazard - India EDIS CODE: BH-20100314-25317-IND Date & Time: 2010-03-14 03:58:37 [UTC] Area: India, State of Gujarat, , Tandalja Not confirmed information! Description: A day after over 30 birds were found dead in the Tandalja area, a post-mortem report suggested the birds died of food poisoning. Over 16 crows, 10 kites and a few egrets have been registered dead at various places in the area between 10.30 am and 3 pm on Friday. Following the incident, the corpes were sent to the city’s Veterinary Polyclinic for post- mortem. The primary reports on Saturday showed the birds consumed some unidentified poisonous food. “We have been able to save five crows. The primary investigation conducted at the Animal Disease Investigation Unit (ADIU) showed that all the affected birds had symptoms of respiratory sluggishness, dullness and vomiting. It is possible that they consumed some rotten meat or poisoned food,” said Dr Snehal Patel, the officer at the Veterinary Polyclinic. The samples have been sent to the Anand Veterinary College for further investigation. “We found that a butcher in the area had left the poisoned meat outside his shop which was consumed by the birds. We informed the Forest Department about the incident but no action has been taken,” said Ashok Pawar, the president of city-based NGO Crocodile Group. The group on Saturday also carried out a funeral procession of the dead birds.
