Description:

An eight-year-old student died and 13 children were injured when the driver of their schoolvan lost control of the vehicle and it overturned near Peravurani on Tuesday. S Priyanka, a student of a private high school died, all studying in Class II to VI were injured. They were admitted to a private hospital in Thanjavur. Driver of the van Prabhu (35) is said to be absconding. It is said that the driver lost control of the vehicle while he was negotiating a curve near Sengamalam after picking up the children from Avanam, a nearby town. There were 23 children in the van when the vehicle skidded off the road and turned turtle in the impact. According to an injured child, the driver was speaking on his mobile phone when he lost control of the vehicle. Parents of the children staged a road roko on Peravurani-Pattukkottai Road to protest alleged callous attitude of the duty doctor at the GH, Peravurani. It is said that the duty doctor refused to attend to the injured children saying that his duty time was over. The public also beseiged RDO Meiyalagan’s car when he visited the spot. SP Senthil Velan later pacified the public. Traffic on Pattukottai- Peravurani Road was hit for more than two hours due to road block. Commercial Taxes Minister S N M Ubadullah visited the injured children at the private hospital.
