Description:

An Icelandair Boeing 757-200, registration TF-FIU performing flight FI-688 from Orlando Sanford,FL (USA) to Keflavik (Iceland), was enroute at FL330 near Bathurst,NB (Canada) about 370nm northeast of Boston,MA (USA) at 02:00Z (Mar 21st), when the crew was informed a volcano had erupted in southern Iceland forcing all suitable Icelandic Airports to close. The crew decided to divert to Boston where the airplane landed safely about 90 minutes later. A volcano at Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Southern Iceland had started a small eruption at around 23:30Z (Mar 20th) sending ash clouds up to FL200 so far. The Icelandic CAA closed the airspace 120nm around the volcano for all aircraft.
