Description:

Local residents Saturday were watching for flooding as heavy rains fell in the community. This was in contrast to 17 years ago, when the “Storm of the Century” moved into the community bringing with it more than two feet of snow. Bradley County was under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and Flood Advisories by the National Weather Service Friday. More than 1-1/2 inches of rainfall were recorded within a two-hour period at the Bellfounte Weather Station, located off North Lee Highway. Bradley County Emergency Management Agency officials sent warnings of impending weather and storms moving into the area Friday afternoon. Torrential downpours, some including pea-sized hailstones, caused flooding in numerous areas of Bradley County and inside the city. No major power outages were reported, but city and county public works crews were busy unstopping clogged drains. Several car crashes were reported as well as some stranded motorists who traversed flooded streets and drowned out their vehicle’s electrical systems. Local emergency managers and NWS officials will be hosting a Weather Spotters class this week at the Bradley County Emergency Management Agency. Friday was the anniversary of the “Storm of ‘93” which reportedly took the lives of approximately 300 people and caused billions of dollars in revenue and damage as the eastern seaboard was affected. Seventeen years ago Saturday, residents in Bradley County awoke to more than two-feet of snow which caused major damage to several businesses and left hundreds without power for several days until utility crews could respond and restore service.
